 Employee Motivation. 



Motivation is an essential component of success and corporate prosperity in today's dynamic and competitive market. It is composed of both internal and external components, such as work factors, individual differences, and organizational practices (Gopal and Chowdhury, 2014). Motivation and Leadership are inseparably linked. Leadership success is critically dependent on and sometimes defined by, leaders' capacity to encourage followers toward group goals or a shared mission or vision (Shamir et al, 1998, cited in Naile, 2014).


Leadership is essential in any organization. Managers can influence employee behaviour in the workplace through leadership. Thus, one of the most significant outcomes of good leadership is motivated, employees (Naile and Selesho, 2014). Managers must develop as leaders to understand their employees' needs and expectations, which shape the culture of the organization (Rahbi et al, 2017). Managers can be leaders, but all leaders are not usually managers.  At the same time, a person can be both a manager and a leader (Dusun and Demir, 2015).

Leaders encourage employees by establishing systems that maximize the potential of employees, as well as the resources available to the organization, and by offering direction (Altheeb, 2020). Specifically, a leader's job is to motivate employees to realize their full potential in achieving the organization's goals. Employee satisfaction, as well as leadership and motivation, are important variables determining the organization's success (Dervic and Dervic, 2017).

Importance of employee motivation for an organization/

01. Increases Productivity

Motivation is a process that leads to an increase in the productivity of the employee. Motivation meets the needs of the employee and thereby creates the drive to work to the best of his abilities. A well-employee will be willing to put in more effort towards the betterment of the organization than another disheartened employee  (Gopal and Chowdhury, 2014).

02. Ensures Organisational Efficiency

Motivation plays an important role in changing the attitudes of the employees in the organization. An Indifferent attitude is extinguished most efficiently by motivation. The presence of such a favorable attitude allows the organization to thrive and be successful (Korejan and Shahbazi, 2016).

03. Ensures Loyal Workforce.

A well-motivated workforce is a loyal workforce. Motivated employees have high levels of morale and commitment towards the organization and its goals and objectives. Motivation thus reduces employee turnover and reduces the need for constant induction of new employees (Robnagel, 2016).

According to Smith & Cronje (1992), Maslow’s theory is explained relies on the fact that people want to increase what they want to achieve in life, and their needs are prioritised according to their importance. I work for a leading bank in the financial sector. Once a person’s basic psychological and safety requirements are addressed, the theory states that they will develop a desire to belong, get respect, and eventually realise their full potential. The last stage has the potential to have a negative impact on a bank’s bottom line. While top management ensures that a bank’s process for opening savings accounts is efficient and uses cutting-edge technology, a bank employee will almost certainly be involved at some stage.

Hi purnima, agree with you, adding to your points, motivated and committed employees with high levels of job involvement are considered as important asset to an organization (Denton, 1987). to Keep the employee motivation, commitment and job involvement up, is always rewarding to a business; as motivated and committed employees are more productive (Denton, 1987).

Further, employees in both public and private sectors require motivation from their organization to perform in the most favorable way in their job role and obtain job satisfaction. Money is one of the main motivational factors while other factors can be identified as rewards, appreciation, recognition, positive company culture, professional development, flexible work schedules, career development opportunities, job security and work environment (Pink, 2011).

Hi Purnima, agreed your points and adding to that introduction on employee motivation, Lindner (1998) defined it in relation to the person and the organization where he stated that employee motivation is the inner force that drives an employee in his/her quest to achieve personal and organizational goals.

  6. Agree with you Purnima. Motivation is essential for encouraging individuals to perform effectively in the long run and assisting an organization in growing. Employees who are motivated will be satisfied with their jobs, and if they are satisfied with their jobs, they will work hard to achieve organizational goals, and if goals are met, the company will get the profit (Zafar et al., 2014).

Management and coordination of human activity has become crucial to achieving organizational objectives. Buford et al., (1995) defined employee motivation as a predisposition to behave in a purposive manner to achieve specific, unmet needs.

    Well explained, While employers understand that they need to provide a work environment that creates motivation, many fail to understand the significance of motivation in accomplishing the company's mission and vision. Even when they understand the importance of motivation, employers often lack the skill and knowledge to provide a work environment that fosters employee motivation. (Allen 2009)

  14. Hi Purnima, well explained. Where this can be categorized as Intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Doing something related to work because its individually motivated and the results will give rewards and believes by themselves can be defines as Intrinsic motivation such as receiving positive feedback from the supervisor, career guidance, honor or feelings (Deci,1973). Doing or working something because the person will get rewarded or recognized through external factors can be defined as extrinsic motivation such as bonuses, awards, rewards (Reiss, 2005).
